We started something new in class today called Sentence of the Week. The purpose of this exercise is to come up with a list of "Rules for Writing". Each week three sentences that emphasize a different area of grammar are posted on the board and students will brainstorm about what they notice about each sentence. Thus creating our rules for writing. This week our sentences were:
"I have arrived," said Jack.
"That hurts!" screamed Mary.
"Are you sure?" asked Joe.
What we discovered about each sentence was that, every one began with a capital letter and ended with a form of punctuation, the spoken words of the sentence were in quotation marks "". Finally we observed that the punctuation that goes along with the spoken words is written inside the quotation marks, NOT after. Homework for Monday is to write three sentences that mimic the structure of the above three, but have different content.
After the sentence of the week we discussed our Harris Burdick stories. Everyone wrote a planning outline in their notebook. In class everyone had to come up with a list of 10 powerful words that they can use in their story. Here is our powerful word list.
Finally, we finished up class by reading the last couple of pages of chapter 25 in Touching Spirit Bear. We left on another cliffhanger! Till Monday.....
