Oct 10, 2012 Lit Circles

Homework: Finish editing mentor text by Friday the 12th!

We continued with our lit circles today, reading chapters 17 and 18.  Cole is back on the island and is learning that he can channel his anger in more productive ways than he has used in the past....but seriously who could sit in ice cold water every morning??  Not this lady.

After reading I showed everyone an awesome article I had found on ACTUAL spirit bears!  This whole time I thought they were something fictional just used for the story.  Turns out they are real!  This article explains what spirit bears actually are and where they can be found.  Here is a video of a spirit bear as well

Finally we finished up with kind of a strange activity....definitely entertaining!  We watched a video called words.  The first time through students just had to watch.  Of course with no introduction the video made no sense.  The second time through we told them to think about the title and see if they could find any patterns.  It still really made no sense.  Eventually after watching the video 4-5 times students began picking up the pattern!  The video was a series of images/clips of homophones and homonyms.  We will delve more deeply into this tomorrow, but here are the definitions:

Homophone: Words that sound the same but have different meanings, and may or may not be spelled the same

Homonym: Words that sound and are spelled the same, but have different meanings

See if you can pick up on any homophones and/or homonyms tonight!
