Oct 29, 2012 Plot Diagramming

Welcome back from fall break! We opened class with DEAR to sort of quietly ease everyone back into the swing of things....Then we discussed the WKCE test that will be happening tomorrow at the beginning of the day.  Everyone took a practice test so that they saw a really good example of what the reading test will look tomorrow.  Remember to get a good nights sleep and eat breakfast in the morning!

After our practice test, we discussed plot diagrams and what that is....as we discussed a plot diagram is something used to map out the major events in a story.  There are typically 5 sections in a plot diagram and they are:

1. Exposition: The beginning.  We are introduced to the main character, the setting, and the main conflict or problem
2. Rising Action: The part of the story that builds on the conflict, our interest, and suspense
3. Climax: The turning point in the story.  The main character comes face to face with their conflict and usually changes in some way
4. Falling Action: Loose ends of the conflict and climax are tied up
5. Resolution: The story comes to a reasonable ending

We discussed how the different events in Touching Spirit Bear tied into this and watched an episode of Spongebob Squarepants that lays out this sequence of events extremely well.  Tomorrow we will plot the episode and Touching Spirit Bear.  As well as discuss what it means to read like a detective......Have a great night and check out all of the Hurricane Sandy footage!
