Homework: Explain inference about topic of article
We started out class today by working on Compass Learning. We normally do this on Friday's but we will be doing something else on Friday so decided to switch it up.
After working on this we had DEAR time and then moved on to working on a new skill, inferring.
To infer means to draw a conclusion or educated guess based on the facts you are presented with or what you already know. We practiced making inferences on weather reports. Then, students were given a strip of paper with a sentence on it pulled from an article. Students had to walk around and see what sentences other students had to see if they could figure out what the article might be about....We had some pretty interesting guesses! Some thought that the article was about a ghost haunting people, others thought that it was about a war, the list goes on.
For homework, students need to write a paragraph describing what they think the article is about (their inference) and then explain what helped them get to that conclusion (their background knowledge plus the information presented).
