We started class today with our read-aloud Chasing Lincoln's Killer. It got pretty suspenseful when the Union Cavalry came within 200 yards of John Wilkes Booth and his accomplices. We will continue reading throughout the week.
We then went through and reviewed what we have learned throughout the non-fiction unit to prepare for our assessment tomorrow in class. We used an article to practice text coding and writing a summary. Make sure you review how to write a good summary (topic sentences, supporting details, concluding sentence), what the text codes are, inferring and comparing and contrasting articles (your venn diagrams).
I couldn't get the article itself uploaded on here, but you all should have brought them home. Here is an example of a summary of the article:
The article entitled, Surviving the Storm, is about a boy named Cody and his town's experience surviving a tornado. In March of 2012 a tornado passed through Henryville, IN where Cody lives. Cody was in school when he and his classmates first heard the warning, but since tornadoes so rarely hit their town no one thought much of it. After getting home Cody took shelter in the basement and waited for the storm to pass. The tornado left a ton of destruction behind and tore much of the town apart, and even killed one man. Cody is now in college and the town has been rebuilding what it has lost ever since.
