Homework: Finish filling in story blanks
Today we studied Goldilocks and the Three Bears! Wait.....what? I know that's what you're all thinking!
Just kidding, we really studied theme and discovered what mentor texts are and how they can help us as writers.
We used familiar fables to discuss theme. What is theme? Many think it is the main idea, but as we found out in class, theme is the lesson of the story. It is what the author is trying to teaching you. Theme IS NOT the main idea of the story, or what the author is writing about. Theme is usually a life lesson and can be found by thinking about the characters traits, their motives, what the author is trying to convey through the story. Theme will usually not be specifically stated in the story. Examples we discussed in class: The Boy who Cried Wolf's theme is "Don't be a liar or you will not be trusted". Goldilocks and the Three Bears theme is "Don't misuse other's property".
We then introduced mentor texts to everyone. A mentor text is when you take a piece of writing and use it as a framework for your own and change the descriptive words to make it your own. The writing that is already there gives you great examples of sentence structure and word choice. So we read Goldilocks and the Three Bears to the class and then used it to create a mentor text. We took the descriptive words out and replaced them with blanks. So the homework for tonight is to finish filling in the blank spaces with your descriptive words! Remember be as creative as you want, just as long as it still makes sense!
